The aim of the course is to provide a framework for understanding environmental and planning debates, while engaging in a critical discussion of the idea of sustainable development. Through studying Athens, we learn sustainability issues and challenges that apply to other Mediterranean cities and through a continuous comparison method we learn about urban sustainability issues in general. In this context, most of the questions we will discuss will force us to think comparatively, study the urban and ecological relations across all spatial scales, and from the point of view of different stakeholders.
