Studying abroad at CYA in Athens, Greece has been an incredibly valuable experience that has helped me grow personally, academically, and professionally. Being immersed in Greek culture allowed me to fully embrace and appreciate their rich history and traditions. The courses offered at CYA introduced me to new subjects and provided the opportunity to learn from experienced professors. Interacting with classmates from different backgrounds enriched our discussions and broadened my perspective. Personally, living in a foreign country taught me to be adaptable and independent. Professionally, this experience enhanced my understanding of global issues and expanded my network, offering valuable skills and connections for my future career. Overall, my semester at CYA has been an unforgettable journey of personal, academic, and professional development.

What advice do you have for prospective students who are interested in or planning to study abroad with CYA?

My advice would be first, to take the time to research and familiarize yourself with the culture, customs, and history of Greece. This background knowledge will enhance your understanding and appreciation of the country during your stay. Second, be open-minded and embrace the opportunity to step out of your comfort zone. Studying abroad is a chance to explore new perspectives, try new things, and make lasting connections. Take advantage of the cultural immersion and engage with locals as much as possible. Additionally, make an effort to learn at least some basic Greek phrases. It will go a long way in building connections and showing respect for the local language. Lastly, be proactive in planning and organizing your time abroad. Take the initiative to explore the city, travel to other parts of Greece, and participate in extracurricular activities offered by CYA. This will enrich your experience and create lifelong memories.

As for what I wish I knew before starting my study abroad experience, having a budgeting plan in place and researching affordable local options for food, transportation, and entertainment would have been beneficial to manage expenses effectively. Lastly, I would advise future students to make an effort to balance their academic workload with exploring the city and participating in cultural activities, as finding the right balance between studying and experiencing the local culture can greatly enhance the overall study abroad experience.

How was the political climate in Greece different from what are you used to? If applicable, describe a time when you had to navigate a political conversation during your time abroad.
