Based on your experience with CYA, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester or summer abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

Spending a semester abroad for me was deeply impactful. Not only did it stimulate my academic growth, but it was meaningful for my personal growth. Although I am a Greek American who already had a relationship with the country by growing up visiting in the summers, this experience helped me to live Greece in a brand new way. It encouraged independence in a new way. I got to practice and regain my Greek language skills, which had lessened a little while being away from family at college. I got to adventure around Athens and Greece, seeing new places and adopting a more European mentality. I ate good food and met even better people. From the administrators to the faculty to the cafeteria staff, all the faculty and staff at CYA were all excellent. They not only exhibited but exemplified the Greek sentiments of φιλοξενία and φιλότιμο, which made the experience all the more welcoming and beautiful. Even though I was away from home, at CYA I felt cared for and cared about. This attitude also had an impact on all the students at CYA, who adopted these same principles of kindness and compassion. The experience was fantastic, and I can't say enough nice things about it and how much I loved it.

What advice do you have for prospective students who are interested in or planning to study abroad with CYA?

Try to find out about places and events where there will be Greek college students. Greek college students love being in places with a cool vibe and talkative, fun crowds. This might include eating at Greek food tavernas or cafeterias in places like Zografou, Egaleo, or Panormou where many college students live. Greek college students also love going to concerts and music events. In the winter season, Greek pop stars and traditional singers will perform their residencies at music venues, which you can attend for about €20 with a drink included. It's affordable and a ton of fun! Just know that you might need to dress a little nicer and make a reservation.
