Based on your experience with CYA, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester or summer abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

During my time with CYA, I was able to fully appreciate all of the benefits and opportunities that an academic semester abroad can offer, both personally and academically. My love for history and classical studies has increased exponentially, and my time in Greece has only further cemented this. I now know that my future academic and professional plans of getting a PhD in this field is something I will pursue and I plan to come back to Greece in the next few years to join archaeological digs and take part in programs with the ASCSA. In terms of my academic studies, CYA truly brought what I was reading in textbooks back on my home campus to life. The on-site lectures and field trips led by CYA faculty provided me with a level of learning and comprehension that would not have been possible back home.

What advice do you have for prospective students who are interested in or planning to study abroad with CYA?

Just do it--especially for those studying Classical Studies or other related fields. CYA offers so many opportunities and it truly is an incomparable experience that will forever impact your studies in the best way possible. I don't think anything that I imagined my semester abroad could have prepared me for all the amazing experiences and educational (and networking!) opportunities that I received.

How was the political climate in Greece different from what are you used to? If applicable, describe a time when you had to navigate a political conversation during your time abroad.

In general, the Greeks are a lot more interested in the "why" of things. They want to know why you believe in the things that you do, what life experiences have influenced this, and what you do to support the causes that you support. While they may adhere to a completely different political leaning than your own, there is never any judgment toward you because of it. If anything, they want to know your opinions on things and how these beliefs influenced the person you are today.

please select any of the following that apply to you, and that you would be willing to share about your CYA experience with other students:

Post-Grad programs and networking within the Classical Studies fields.

Briefly describe a cultural experience you had that was significant to you in any way.

Even if they don't speak any English, the Greek people are so welcoming and hospitable and will do anything they can to help you if you ask them.
