Having spent the semester abroad, I feel much more independent now than I did when I first got to Greece. I have gained a greater sense of confidence in myself and my ability to navigate new and unfamiliar experiences that I do not think I would have obtained had I not immersed myself in a new country, alone. Traveling to and within a country with an entirely different culture and language from my own is an incredible learning experience. I have greatly expanded upon my knowledge of Greece's geography, history, cuisine, etc., and that worldly understanding is unique to spending time here. Academically, I am very grateful to have had classes with students from many different American universities. I found it extremely valuable for us to share our own knowledge on topics so as to get a new perspective on things, and to generate new ideas. Coming from a big school, I really appreciated the small class settings at CYA, as it felt easier to form connections with both my peers and my professors. In terms of professional development, my experience at CYA has led me to form a deeper sense of responsibility, and I feel ready to take on any tasks in my future career.

What advice do you have for prospective students who are interested in or planning to study abroad with CYA?

It can be scary to go abroad! Know that everyone is in the same boat as you, we are all relatively new to the city and to each other, and we are all curious and excited to learn more! It is such a fun experience to meet other college students from all over the U.S., and CYA does a great job at facilitating opportunities throughout the semester for you to meet other students 🙂 Athens is a big city — but there is a welcoming and small community within it for you!

please select any of the following that apply to you, and that you would be willing to share about your CYA experience with other students:

Accessibility, Finances, LGBTQIA+ student, Mental health

Favorite food in Greece?

Stuffed tomatoes and peppers 🙂

Favorite class you took at CYA?

Feminist Urbanism and Radical Geography
