Personal growth is the biggest benefit for studying abroad. The daily stressors of school and work become so all-encompassing that you forget what it means to live. Being abroad in Greece allowed me to rediscover myself and work on making myself a better human for those in my life. I also had time to work on my running and did what I wanted to do, such as run the Athens half-marathon and Rhodes Marathon.

What advice do you have for prospective students who are interested in or planning to study abroad with CYA?

Take it easy and put yourself out there. When I first arrived in Greece, I was a bit nervous to start all over again with friendships and community. I felt lonely the first two days and I was putting so much pressure on myself. After I realized how everyone else was in the same boat and how amazing the next few months were going to be, I learned to let go. I met people, hung out with who I wanted to, and made long-lasting friendships with those I felt close to.

How was the political climate in Greece different from what are you used to? If applicable, describe a time when you had to navigate a political conversation during your time abroad.

I took a political science class, so I had the opportunity to see first-hand how political discussions were different when compared to those in the United States. Conversations were much more blunt, less filtered, and more open to various opinions. I hadn't felt that as much at my home institution, and having that freedom in Greece allowed me to explore different perspectives with more intentionality.

please select any of the following that apply to you, and that you would be willing to share about your CYA experience with other students:

Finances, Religion, STEM major

Briefly describe a cultural experience you had that was significant to you in any way.

I was at the Good Friday procession in Pangrati a couple of days before Orthodox Easter. I prayed and moved with the crowd of people and had the chance to practice silent prayer and felt accepted by my community.

Favorite food in Greece?

Gyros!!! Ιt's everywhere and soo good.

Favorite class you took at CYA?

John Karavas' Ancient Macedon class was hands-down my favorite class. His enthusiasm and charisma made the class all the more enjoyable.

Favorite quote from abroad?

"Go left when nothing goes right!" - street corner in Pangrati

What extracurricular activities were you involved with in Greece?

I was involved in the running scene and participated in multiple races and went to Catholic church nearly every weekend.
