Dr. Nikos Papadimitriou is a research scientist at the Laboratory of Solar and Energy Systems, at NCSR “Demokritos”, since 2021. He holds a Diploma (5-year studies) in Chemical Engineering (NTUA, 2004), a Master’s Degree in Energy Production and Management (NTUA, 2007) and a PhD (NTUA, 2009) in the field of gas storage in solid materials for energy and environmental applications. He is currently studying for a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA, Hellenic Open University).

He has previously worked at NCSR “Demokritos” as a postdoctoral researcher (2010-2016), at Leiden Academic Center for Drug Research (Netherlands) as a visiting researcher (2012-2014) and at the Greek Public Power Corporation (PPC) S.A. as the head of Fuels and Lubricants Laboratory (2016-2021).

His research interests reside in the fields of: solar energy, thermal energy storage, and materials science for energy applications. In particular, they are related to applications such as: domestic solar systems, concentrating solar power (CSP), energy storage in the form of sensible or latent heat, and phase-change materials (PCM). Moreover, he has great expertise in hydrogen storage, in CO2 sequestration and exploitation, and in the utilization of clathrate hydrates in various industrial processes mainly for energy production and gas storage and separation. He has also been involved in research about the diffusion processes through biological membranes. In the works above, he has used both experimental and computational methods.

He has significant experience in a variety of computational methods (either on the molecular or the macroscopic level) and he has utilized various types of specialized software, e.g. Comsol, Matlab, Gromacs, MCCCS Towhee. Furthermore, he is familiar with several experimental techniques including: gas chromatography, FT-IR and XRF spectroscopy, elemental analysis, gas and liquid porosimetry.

He has 23 publications in international journals, 30 announcements in conferences, more than 500 hetero-citations (Scopus h-index 10). He is a reviewer in many journals in his field, and he has participated in research projects funded by various national and European organizations. His work has been honored with awards and distinctions (from IUPAC, IKY, Eugenides Foundation, etc.). Additionally, he is involved in several activities for science communication to the general public.
