What to Eat | Eating Vegan and Vegetarian in Athens

Thinking about studying abroad in Athens and wondering what you are going to eat since you’re vegan or vegetarian? Luckily, Athens and Greece, in general, are becoming more vegan and vegetarian friendly. Today, you will find restaurants in Athens that cater specifically to vegans and vegetarians. Additionally, you will find that the Greeks enjoy their fresh fruits and vegetables, and many of the dishes you will have here include eggplants, zucchini, peppers, cucumbers, and tomatoes.

There are many websites you can check out to see what others say about eating vegan in Greece. These include VeganGuideGreece, VeganInAthens, and I also recommend checking out Pinterest! Veganism is trending in Greece and there is even a festival that takes place in Athens in the spring, called Vegan Life Festival.

Restaurants

There are plenty of restaurants that cater specifically to the Vegan and Vegetarian crowd. Below find a list of some popular places to eat around the city. While not all of them are specifically vegan and vegetarian, many of them have dishes that cater to different diets. While this list is not exhaustive, almost every restaurant in Athens will have dishes that are vegan and vegetarian. Mystic: Located just at the top of the stadium, Mystic Pizza has vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and regular pizza. Try the Dessert Vegan trunk!

Ohh Boy: Popular for brunch with plenty of vegan options!

Athens City Center

Avocado: A popular choice amongst students, Avocado Vegetarian Vegan Café is located in Plaka and has a wide variety of foods, all vegetarian. They do a great job labeling what is vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free.

Veganaki: a 10-minute walk from the Academic Center, Veganaki has plenty of options including zucchini and spinach pies, salads, sandwiches, traditional Greek Dishes, and beverages.

Dickie Dee Ice Cream: a popular ~ and delicious~ soft serve ice cream shop near Syntagma Square with vegan flavors. Pro tip: get the cotton candy too!

IT Restaurant: Located in Kolonaki, this place has a popular Sunday brunch and does a great job labeling what is vegetarian and vegan on its menu.

Vegan Beat: Right in the heart of Monastiraki, this place is all vegan and there is a wide variety of options. You can even order it on e-foods!

Falafellas: Falafellas is raved about by students and staff as having some of the best falafel in Athens!

Mama Roux: With extensive menus both for Sunday brunch and a separate menu for the other days of the week, Mama Roux is definitely worth the visit. They offer special events including Cooking #WithRefugees and live Jazz Brunches! Check them out!

Mama Tierra: An all vegan restaurant offering vegan versions of traditional Greek dishes, Mama Tierra is listed as one of the best Vegan restaurants in Athens! They have a variety of dishes including burgers, burritos, pasta, and more!

Cookoomela: This restaurant uses mushrooms as its main ingredient and aims to leave a minimum an impact on the planet as possible. The menu includes gyros, kebabs, salads, and desserts.

Peas Vegan and Raw Food: Peas has a range of wraps, burgers, salads, and desserts that can either be eaten inhouse or takeaway. They source locally and are located not too far from the Acropolis Museum.

Lime Bistro: They consider themselves an Avante-Garde Vegan, gluten-free, and sugar-free bistro. Everything here is handmade including the bread and the pasta, how delicious!

Bamboo Vegan: A vegan café and shop where you can do your grocery shopping with enjoying a nice smoothie or snack. Check this out if you need some vegan cheese, snacks, cosmetics and more!

AVIT: While not close to the city center, but located in Glyfada, AVIT is raved about amongst the locals.
