As a Classical Studies major, there is no experience like studying abroad in Greece itself. Seeing firsthand the monuments and sites that I have been learning about in my classes for two years finally brought ancient history to life for me. The ancient world was no longer vague shapes I read about in thousands of years old books nor pictures of artworks that I squinted at in class, but rather living and breathing history I walked through and saw in person. Before I came to study at CYA for the summer, I was mostly only interested in the ancient Mediterranean world. When I finished my course, I left with an appreciation for Greek culture today and a better understanding of my own identity.

What advice do you have for prospective students who are interested in or planning to study abroad with CYA?

Try to learn at least a few words/phrases in Modern Greek before coming to CYA! Not only will it help your own navigation in Greece, but a "thank you" or "hello" in the locals' own language goes a long way.

And be prepared to be adaptable. You're likely going to run into many situations where you'll have to be patient and problem-solve, whether it be because of language barriers, navigating a city/island, or encountering new cultural norms. Researching before certain situations to prepare always helped me feel more confident.
