Lefteris Topaloglou is an Associate Professor at the Chemical Engineering Department of the Polytechnic School of the University of Western Macedonia, in the field of “Energy Transition & Development Transformation Policies”. Since May 2023 he holds the position of the Director of the Institute of Energy Development & Transition to the Post-Lignite Era, UCRI TEMENUS of the University of Western Macedonia. At the same time, he is the head of the Laboratory of Energy Transition and Developmental Transformation – ENTRA Lab of the Department of Chemical Engineering. His basic degree is in political science and international studies.

He obtained a Master’s Degree (M.Sc) in 2001, in the field of regional development and spatial planning. His PhD thesis, which he completed in 2008, is entitled: “Borders and European Integration: Space, Economy & Politics”, focusing on the nature of borders and the dynamics of the border phenomenon. His research interests are currently focused on the just energy transition, spatial justice, approaches based on place-based analysis and issues related to the governance of the energy transition.

His teaching experience begins in 2001 and continues uninterrupted until today, both in undergraduate and postgraduate programs. His research experience is related to a total of 28 research projects, most of which involve European Commission multiannual funding (FP5, FP6, FP7, HORIZON, ESPON) on borders and just transition. In three of these research projects, he is the scientific manager. His scientific work involves co-editing of books, publications in collective volumes, publications in scientific journals and a significant number of publications in scientific conferences with review & proceedings.
