How to Build an Autocracy and How to Resist One
![]()
This course examines the anatomy of authoritarianism and hybrid regimes (e.g. electoral autocracies like Hungary)— how they emerge, how they sustain themselves, and how they are resisted. Moving between political theory, comparative case studies, and the textures of everyday life, students will develop a toolkit for understanding contemporary democratic erosion and illiberal governance across diverse global contexts. Case studies draw primarily from Hungary, Turkey, and Russia.
