I have grown so much over these past 2 months that it’s almost impossible to encompass everything I’ve learned about myself. The confidence I have in myself has grown, as well as my understanding of how people see me and how to navigate different cultures. I feel so much more ready to plan for my future and face the things that scare me. This time has prepared me for all that life has to offer and opened up the world to me.
This has also helped me rely on and connect with people very deeply. The friendships I made on this trip will last years, and I am going to be in contact and visiting my friends back in the states as well. This environment really helps foster relationships. You become a we instead of an I.
What advice do you have for prospective students who are interested in or planning to study abroad with CYA?
I would say that under packing is better than overpacking. Leave some room in that suitcase! You can always buy things while you’re over here. Also, get excited! Spend some time making a bucket list before you get over here. Budget, budget, budget.
How was the political climate in Greece different from what you are used to? If applicable, describe a time when you had to navigate a political conversation during your time abroad.
People are definitely more politically active here, and most people that I met were pretty far left, so I didn’t have any super tense conversations. Strikes are very common, especially taxi strikes, so sometimes we had to utilize public transport.
I would say that people are pretty racist towards the Romani population, so I did have to explain to people the cultural differences there, and how I wasn’t comfortable with some terms or stereotypes that they used. Everyone who I spoke with about this was very respectful and receptive.
