Spending a semester abroad with CYA has been one of the most transformative experiences of my academic journey while in college. Immersing myself in Greek culture deepened my understanding of history and archaeology. It also challenged me to think more about global connections and cultural perspectives. Living and learning in the small town, Karystos, Evia, Greece, encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone, engage with new ideas and things I might not understand fully, and build meaningful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds. Academically, my courses learning approach with combining classroom discussions with on site dig experience allowed me to connect the theories with my lived experiences. This hands on education improved my ability to analyze material culture, think independently, and approach a problem with creativity and curiosity. Personally, studying abroad helped with my adaptability, confidence, and cross-cultural communication skills. I learned how to navigate new environments with openness and resilience, and these skills will serve me both in my studies and future career as an aspiring Archaeologist. The CYA experience has expanded my global awareness, a quality that I believe is important in understanding and addressing the needs of communities.
What advice do you have for prospective students who are interested in or planning to study abroad with CYA?
My biggest piece of advice is to approach everything with curiosity and openness. Studying abroad with CYA is more than just taking classes in another country. It is an opportunity to learn from the world around you every day. Be willing to explore beyond your comfort zone, whether that means trying a new food, learning a few Greek phrases, or engaging in conversations with the locals. Don’t be afraid to get lost in the town with some friends, sometimes the best experiences come from unplanned moments. Also, take advantage of the CYA’s resources from your professors, staff, and peers. They can be incredible guides and supporters in moments like these . The more you immerse yourself, the more you’ll grow both academically and personally. I do wish I knew how quickly time would pass and how important it is to be fully present. It’s easy to get caught up in planning weekend trips or capturing every moment, but the real beauty of studying abroad lies is the everyday experiences like walking through the streets and grabbing coffee with classmates, or discussing Greek history in your classroom. I also wish I had known that it’s okay to feel a mix of excitement and nervousness at first because those emotions are part of what makes the experience so meaningful. Embracing every challenge and difference with an open mind truly allows you to make the most of your time abroad.
