Studying abroad has become a defining aspect of my academic experience. Simply put, it is a hands-on, immersive approach to academia. For instance, I am a PPE major and I went to Greece. While there, I was able to learn about the birth of democracy and how it has changed over the centuries. Furthermore, being in a different environment allows you to consider global perspectives that may deviate from ones at home. I believe this aspect alone is what gives programs like CYA their charm. I got to experience first hand another culture and consider perspectives different from my own, which had an astronomical impact on both my academic and personal growth.
What advice do you have for prospective students who are interested in or planning to study abroad with CYA?
I feel like the program was pretty clear about expectations. There wasn't anything specifically that threw me off guard. I would however mention that with CYA in particular, depending on your program, there is A LOT of traveling. I mention this because I think it's important for students to know how to prepare for constant movement. Travel light and budget accordingly.
How was the political climate in Greece different from what you are used to? If applicable, describe a time when you had to navigate a political conversation during your time abroad.
For me it was interesting to look at the political climate of the U.S. from the outside. Seeing how the Greek parliament operated gave me insight into the procedures used by my home government. For example, I thought the multi-party system was interesting in comparison with the U.S. two-party system. Having this alternative perspective allowed me to better evaluate the pros and cons of both structures.
Please select any of the following that apply to you, and that you would be willing to share about your CYA experience with other students:
Accessibility, Mental health, Classical Studies minor
Briefly describe a cultural experience you had that was significant to you in any way.
The people in general were very nice and open to sharing their experiences. They would often ask you questions about your personal life in an attempt to get to know you, even if the interaction was brief.
