It isn't easy to describe the biggest impacts of studying abroad because they are not always imminent. During my semester abroad, I had the time of my life, made amazing friends and connections, and ventured out of my comfort zone every day, but I also changed in ways I yet cannot describe. I came back home with the same bags but a very different person.
These last five months, I learned to see the world outside of my bubble, city, state, and my own beliefs. It changed how I see myself and the world I live in. I became stronger as an individual and equally more sensitive towards people and the planet. Greece and its natural beauty made me more environmentally cautious, and the Greek people made me realize that you don’t always need to know the same language to have a heartfelt conversation. It changed my perception of people I had never met, how different and yet similar we all are.
Academically, I took classes on subjects I would otherwise not have access to; things I did not know I was curious about. Now I have a lifelong interest (or so I think) in archaeology and an in-depth knowledge of Greek contemporary art.
In terms of personal growth, I would be able to answer this part better in 10 to 20 years. Like a video game, the realizations are yet to be unlocked. For now, I enjoy life a lot more. I have a newfound curiosity for benign things and street art. I have a wall filled with smiling pictures, a heart filled with the happiest memories, and an intense craving for Saganaki.

What advice do you have for prospective students who are interested in or planning to study abroad with CYA?

My advice would be to take the risk and do it. And when you are getting on that plane, go with an open heart. I think I had certain expectations of what my study abroad experience would be like. My study abroad experience was drastically different from my expectations, but it was a lot better than I could have ever imagined. Not every day of the semester is going to be exciting; you will still have midterms and finals, but you will also have the most amazing and memorable time of your college experience if you choose to have so. Also, embrace the different parts of Greek culture while you are there- the food, the language, the parades, and holidays. These experiences are irreplaceable. If you want to have a certain experience, don’t always wait for others to join and take a million pictures and videos. I would advise to embrace what is in front of you and not be disappointed about what did not go as planned.

Please select any of the following that apply to you, and that you would be willing to share about your CYA experience with other students:
