Studying abroad allows students to live amongst a new culture and experience the world in new ways. While studying abroad in Greece, I learned more about culture and the world than I ever had before. Living amongst a new culture and in a new environment exposes you to many different things that can benefit you in numerous ways. Studying abroad contributed to my personal growth by putting me outside my comfort zone. I encountered numerous situations that I didn't know how to deal with initially, but over time, I was able to learn. Living in another country and away from my friends and family increased my confidence, independence, and adaptability. Also, immersing myself in the Greek culture helped me learn more about my own culture and identity. Academically, I learned more about Greek (ancient and current) culture, politics, and general life. The information that I learned while studying abroad has been (and will be) beneficial in my academic career because it gave me a new perspective to look at society and the world. Professionally, studying abroad and navigating life in another country helped me hone in my communication and problem-solving skills.
What advice do you have for prospective students who are interested in or planning to study abroad with CYA?
I would tell prospective students that they should do everything that CYA has to offer. CYA offers many great events and opportunities that students should engage in. Also, I would tell students to make an effort to connect with the community and experience the Greek culture more. I wish I had known to bring more cold-weather clothes because the weather was colder towards the end of the semester than I thought it would be.
Please select any of the following that apply to you, and that you would be willing to share about your CYA experience with other students:
Finances, First-generation student, Mental health
