I found that studying abroad caused me to grow significantly as a person. Growing in confidence, independence, tenacity, and problem solving were some of the benefits of being in Athens. Studying abroad makes you excited to push yourself and step out of your comfort zone, but all trips have hiccups and moments when you have to figure it out

What advice do you have for prospective students who are interested in or planning to study abroad with CYA?

Being present in the moment is the best thing to keep in mind while traveling abroad. I would tell students to find time to appreciate the small things while in Greece; cafe culture, the parks, the farmers market are all experiences that are easy to miss, but those little moments of happiness really add to your daily life and what you remember about the city.

How was the political climate in Greece different from what are you used to? If applicable, describe a time when you had to navigate a political conversation during your time abroad.

I found that politics was not something that came up in conversation very often, occasionally it would in one of my classes, but I did not find it to be very difficult to navigate. I would say that socially Greece does feel more conservative, especially coming from a liberal state; however, there were also clearly a lot of people with different political opinions in Athens.

Please select any of the following that apply to you, and that you would be willing to share about your CYA experience with other students:

Classical Studies major, Greece-based traveler, LGBTQIA+ student, Mental health

Briefly describe a cultural experience you had that was significant to you in any way.

During my time at CYA I became good friends with Dimitris, the owner of Kekkos and because he taught me so much about Greece, and its culture and food, I decided to share with him one of the breads that my family traditionally makes around Thanksgiving. Through this exchange and the friendship that came after it, I really understood Greek hospitality on a more personal level, it's not just about being welcomed but showing care through action.

Favorite food in Greece?

Tomato and olive Koulouri were my favorite thing to eat while in Greece.

Favorite class you took at CYA?

Aegean and Ancient Greek Art and Archeology

Favorite quote from abroad?

"Go out there and get lost"

What extracurricular activities were you involved with in Greece?

Marble Carving, bird watching, some of the exploring athens oppurtunities (taco night, show at the Odeion, Black Eye Peas)
