Having a broader range of experiences opens you up to new avenues of thought and exposure that you might not be aware of. Gives a sense of how big the world is and the ability to take advantage of opportunities that are available. Also forces you to be able to be flexible and be ready to adapt to situations. Also just real world experience in surviving.
What advice do you have for prospective students who are interested in or planning to study abroad with CYA?
Write out some experiences you want to have and look into opportunities that you can do while abroad. Plan out your trip and bit and give yourself a budget for food, travel, daily activities, and going out. Do some research on Athens and Greece and maybe try to learn some Greek.
Please select any of the following identities/experiences/backgrounds/perspectives you would be comfortable sharing about with prospective CYAers:
Finances, First-time international traveler, Student athlete.
Briefly describe a cultural experience you had that was significant to you in any way.
One of the most fun cultural experiences that I had was working the marble carving workshop that is partnered with CYA. I got to learn how to carve and work with marble all while being taught by a native Greek craftsman. I also got to engage with other local Greeks taking the class as well as other international students and travelers wandering though. It was really fun to engage with a cultural art as well as meet interesting folks.
What is your favorite Greek food?
Easily the gyro, cheap and delicious was a staple in my diet from an early lunch to a late night snack. Available anywhere and everywhere, but was also fun to find a local shop and become a regular.
What extracurricular activities were you involved with in Greece?
Marble workshop, lifting/running, sports.
