Dr. H. Bobby Fokidis is a Professor of Biology at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. He earned his Ph.D. in Integrative Biology from Arizona State University and a B.Sc. in Environmental Biology from the University of Toronto. His laboratory focuses on physiological ecology, particularly how hormonal signaling alters with environmental change and shapes animal behavior and stress responses. His international research spans fieldwork across the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Mexico, Brazil, the UK, France, Ethiopia, South Africa, Canada, and the U.S. Frequently collaborating with NGOs, he often involves students in hands-on conservation efforts.
Dr. Fokidis is also an active contributor to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), working with global experts to assess and protect at-risk reptile species. He has published widely in endocrinology, ecology, and conservation science, as well as on innovative approaches to STEM education and frequently contributes to popular media on issues of wildlife conservation and the environment.
Greek by heritage, Dr. Fokidis is thrilled to return to his ancestral homeland as part of the College Year in Athens program, where he will teach Biology and the Wild: Ancient Perspectives, Modern Challenges. Known for his dynamic and unapologetically unconventional teaching style, he brings “frankly too many” years of classroom and field experience to the CYA program.
At Rollins, he teaches Animal Conservation, Vertebrate Zoology, Animal Physiology, and the farcically titled Conspiracy Biology, all while leading students into Florida’s wild landscapes for active research and wildlife monitoring. His return to Greece marks both a personal homecoming and a rare opportunity to connect students to the ecological and historical richness of the Mediterranean.
