A semester with CYA offers transformative personal, academic, and professional benefits. Living and studying in Athens deepened my appreciation for the ancient world beyond textbooks—walking through ruins I had only read about brought history to life. It was a continuation of my passion for exploring how ancient culture shapes modern society, a theme that underpins both my studies in Classics and screenwriting. Academically, CYA enriched my understanding of classical texts and allowed me to engage with them in their original context. Personally, it expanded my worldview—engaging with Greek peers and local communities helped me reflect on identity, tradition, and global citizenship. Professionally, this experience reaffirmed my interest in diplomacy and cultural exchange. My time abroad through CYA strengthened my belief in the power of storytelling and diplomacy to bridge cultures and foster mutual understanding.
What advice do you have for prospective students who are interested in or planning to study abroad with CYA?
My biggest advice is to embrace discomfort. Studying abroad is as much about learning outside the classroom as it is within it. CYA offers incredible opportunities to engage deeply with Greek culture, history, and people, so take full advantage—take advantage of the transit system, talk to your Greek neighbors, and explore beyond the tourist spots.
I wish I knew that feeling out of place at first is normal. It takes time to adjust, but leaning into that uncertainty helped me become more confident and independent. I also wish I had realized sooner how valuable the connections with professors and peers would be—CYA’s small, tight-knit environment encourages meaningful relationships that remain with you well beyond your time in Greece.

Briefly describe a cultural experience you had that was significant to you in any way.
One of the most significant cultural experiences I had in Athens was learning to navigate the public transit system. At first, it was a practical necessity—but over time, it became one of the most authentic ways I connected with the city. Riding the metro and buses consistently, I began to observe the rhythm of everyday Athenian life: students chatting after class, grandparents carrying groceries, workers reading the newspaper or listening to the radio. These moments grounded my experience, showing me a side of Athens that went far beyond monuments and museums.
